Ivanka felt ashamed before the hermit,

And feared disobedience’s reward,

He took his sword from its leather sheath

And brandished the cold steel on high.

‘I should like to have done with thee

Without your seeing the weapon.

Come now, make your prayers,

Pray to God the last time,

For yourself, me, and all mankind,

And then I’ll cut your head off!’

Miron went down on his knees,

Down by the oak sapling,

Which bowed its leaves before him.

The old man said with a smile:

‘Look, Ivan; long must you wait!

Prayers for mankind are long,

Better kill me at once,

And the less tiring it will be for you.’

Ivan angrily frowned,

And boasted stupidly:

‘What has been agreed, remains so:

On with your prayers, though a century they may last!’
